WHAT IT MEANS TO US
Rock + Raw is committed to ensuring that our sourcing of raw materials is ethical, sustainable and responsible. We strive to exceed our customers’ expectations in sourcing ethically and respecting human rights wherever we work with suppliers.
Our suppliers are key partners in the sourcing of materials and services essential for our business, and strong partnerships are needed to ensure that there is transparency and certainty in what is expected of them, and the standards they must maintain.
Sourcing must comply with health and safety, social, environmental and business integrity requirements. These have been prepared by consulting internal and external stakeholders, customers and suppliers.
There are two major components to our General Principles: the impact of sourcing on the environment, and the impact of sourcing on individuals involved in the supply chain. These apply to all suppliers. We expect our direct suppliers to support our commitment to full compliance of this Responsible Sourcing Policy by having full knowledge of its contents and taking ownership and responsibility for their own supply chains back to the primary production level.
1) ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY
Handpicked crystals, sustainable sourcing
All crystals must be hand-picked and hand-collected the surface of small, hand-dug pits. Rock + Raw will only accept crystals extracted through Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM). While it is recognised that ASM does not suffer from some of the issues that Large Scale Mining (LSM) does, Rock + Raw nonetheless expects its suppliers to apply best practice and pay attention to issues that affect LSM such as its impact on biodiversity and soil erosion.
We have strong ties to each of our mineral and crystal suppliers, many of whom are small family run businesses that gather material from their own land. It is hand processed by them. Most of our stones come from Joshua, our contact in Jaipur, India. We have been working with Joshua for four years. His family has been in the stone and crystal business for three generations. They have expert knowledge in sourcing stones and crystals ethically and in a sustainable manner, working directly with miners and ASMs.
Due to quality commitment to International Standards, Joshua’s company has achieved an appreciation from ISO 9001:2008 . They also follow the Best Practice Principles in all the stages of our business. They closely cooperate with the International Gemological Institute (IGI), who authenticate all their stones and crystals.
Land rights and indigenous communities
Land rights of communities, including indigenous peoples, must be protected and promoted. The rights and title to property and land of the individual, indigenous people and local communities must be respected.
Sustainability and wider environmental concerns
Suppliers must ensure that environmental management policies and procedures are in place regarding water, energy, hazardous materials, air quality and emissions, waste, and any other foreseeable risks. Suppliers must ensure that training is provided to all personnel on environmental policies and procedures to ensure effective implementation and compliance.
Suppliers must ensure that best practice is applied with regards to environmental management systems.
There is no doubt that the long-term viability of the sector is inextricably linked to how well its environmental footprint is managed.
Transparency and accountability
Rock + Raw believes in transparent sourcing and supplier traceability, as recommended by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the UK Government’s Guidance on Transparency and Supply Chains.
While we cannot publicly reveal the identity of miners or suppliers for reasons of commercial confidentiality, we are happy to disclose where our precious crystals come from:

2) WORKING PRACTICES
Our suppliers are asked to adhere to a series of working practices designed to ensure respect for fundamental human and employment rights.
Work is conducted on the basis of freely agreed and documented terms of employment
Policies are adopted and adhered to that respect workers, permanent and casual and, at a minimum, safeguard their rights under their employment contract, local, national labour and social security laws and regulations, and applicable collective agreements.
All workers are treated equally and with respect and dignity
All workers are treated with respect and dignity. No worker is subject to any physical, sexual, psychological, verbal harassment, abuse or other form of intimidation. There is no discrimination in employment, including hiring, compensation, advancement, discipline, termination or retirement. In particular, attention is paid to the rights of workers most vulnerable to discrimination.
All workers are paid fair living wages
Workers are provided with a total compensation package that includes wages, overtime pay, benefits and paid leave which meets or exceeds the legal minimum standards or appropriate prevailing industry standards, whichever is higher.
Working hours for all workers are reasonable
Workers are not required to work more than the regular and overtime hours allowed by the law of the country where the workers are employed.
All workers are free to exercise their right to form and/or join trade unions or to refrain from doing so and to bargain collectively
The rights of workers to freedom of association and collective bargaining are recognised and respected.
Workers’ health and safety are protected at work
A healthy and safe workplace is provided to prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with, or occurring in the course of work or as a result of the employer’s operations.
Workers have access to fair procedures and remedies
Workers are provided with transparent, fair and confidential procedures that result in swift, unbiased and fair resolution of difficulties which may arise as part of their working relationship.
Supplier Management System
Rock + Raw expects all suppliers to implement management systems that allow the compliance with this Responsible Sourcing Policy.
This must include:
• Risk management: Rock + Raw expects all suppliers to implement mechanisms to identify, assess and manage risks in all areas addressed by this policy.
• Documentation: Rock + Raw expects its suppliers to be able to demonstrate their compliance with this policy by retaining adequate documentation, which may be reviewed by Rock + Raw upon reasonable notice.
• Communication of this Responsible Sourcing Policy: Rock + Raw expects its suppliers to communicate this policy to all relevant employees and departments.
Continuous improvement, reporting of non-compliance, raising ethical concerns
Rock + Raw expects suppliers to continuously monitor and verify their performance and to continuously improve in line with the Responsible Sourcing Policy.
Any noncompliance with this policy should be reported to Rock + Raw without delay.
We encourage suppliers to raise concerns about ethical compliance of behaviour of a Rock + Raw employee or representative, and to report such concern to us.
